Dear Natalie: Help! I’m Rebelling Against My Own Systems

Dear Natalie 6 Blog

I’m gonna go ahead and say it:

I think creatives make some of the best business owners around.

(…And not just because I’m a creative myself, and work with creatives all over the world.)

Entrepreneurs who think outside the box have changed the world. Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and Arianna Huffington are all rebellious free-thinkers who transformed technology, media, and even the planet as we know it, just by looking at the status quo and thinking, “How can I do better?”

But the trickiest part about being a rebel? When your own desire to smash the structures you see starts to work against you.

Yep, it happens all the time — even to me.

That’s why I was especially excited to dig deep into this week’s Dear Natalie question:

“Dear Natalie,

I would describe myself as a creative who’s spiritual and free spirited. Your planner Conquer Your Year has been providing me with structure I feel I need, but I resist structure so much and feel like this holds me back from being able to grow my business.

I just want to be in my zone all the time and not worry about all the other stuff that comes with running a business. Can you help?”

Ohh yes I can. (And I won’t even tell you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Promise.)

In today’s video, I want to show you how to make all that creativity and rebellion work in your favor, so you can build a business that really fits you.

Watch today’s video to find out:

  • [2:11] One big, true fact about the entire universe that will make you feel amazing about your own creative flow
  • [3:00] An ultra-specific strategy that’s transformed how I plan my weeks
  • [4:30] Why you’re probably rebelling around your own systems
  • [6:04] How I used to schedule my day, and how I do it now that feels so much better
  • [6:54] The advice about “the most successful people”… that I chose to completely ignore

Hope you enjoy.

And before you go to re-think the structures and systems you might be rebelling against, I’d love to know:

What are some current systems and ideas about scheduling that you can totally let go of? Where could you be too rigid right now, when you could be making room for flexibility?

As always, drop the mic in the comments below — reading them is the highlight of my week.

And remember! You can still get your big, burning question answered in the next episode of Dear Natalie. All you have to do is drop it in my inbox at dearnatalie@shetakesontheworld.com, and I just might answer it right here on the blog.

But in the interim: Stay flexible. Stay aware of what works best for you. And watch your business thrive.

Consider this your permission slip.

…Not like you ever needed one. 😉

    Hi Natalie

I enjoyed this video AND your series where you interviewed your doctors. I also work well late at night but worry about screwing up my circadian rhythms. Did you address that with your health people? Did they have any insight into how working late affects your body or better yet, give you suggestions for negating any negative effects?

Oh & I bought your planner in January. For the first time in years, I’ve found one that I’ve been happy to stick with! Thanks… from a fellow expat Canadian (in France).

I *try* to keep a regular sleep schedule. When I go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday, I feel great. Do I always do that? No. The team I worked with definitely encouraged 7-8 hours of sleep and consistency in the time you go to bed and sleep until. There are some cool apps like Smart Alarm and Sleep Cycle that can improve your sleeping patterns.

Thanks for your comment Elizabeth, and I’m cheering you on. :)
